Comparison of Activity Monitors Accuracy in Assessing Intermittent Outdoor Walking

Abstract: Funding. The "Acti-GPS" project was promoted by the University Hospital of Angers and was partially funded by the Genesia Foundation. The "CLASH" project was promoted and partially funded by the University Hospital of Rennes (CORECT 2013). Both the "Acti-GPS" and "CLASH" projects were also partially funded by ENS Rennes. A. Taoum received a postdoctoral scholarship from the ENS Rennes and the Bretagne region (SAD funding). S. Chaudru received a PhD scholarship from the Bretagne region (ARED funding). “…Only 14 studies were performed in other countries (Brazil, n = 6 [ 46 , 49 , 57 , 62 , 63 , 133 ]; Japan, n = 4 [ 59 , 73 , 134 , 135 ]; Australia, n = 3 [ 60 , 90 , 136 ]; Czech Republic, n = 1 [ 65 ]). “…In the majority of studies ( n = 60), PA was measured by means of only walking tasks or by using walking-related PA outcomes (e.g. steps, walked distance) [ 23 , 40 , 41 , 43 , 44 , 46 , 47 , 49 , 52 54 , 56 – 58 , 61 , 62 , 64 – 67 , 69 , 72 , 74 , 75 , 77 , 78 , 83 85 , 89 , 90 , 92 , 93 , 97 , 98 , 101 , 103 , 104 , 107 – 109 , 112 , 113 , 115 , 119 , 121 , 123 , 126 – 130 , 132 , 133 , 136 139 , 141 ].…”

“…To allow a more user-friendly experience than using R software when analyzing GPS walking data, we developed a shiny app available on the Web. Of note, a web platform just recently released ( , accessed on 2 April 2021) along with a published paper [ 26 ] now allows a full automatisation of speed data analysis, rather than manually building speed data filters that would be the best suited for the detection of walking and stopping bouts performed during the session. Unfortunately, the web platform does not yet provide contextual information (map, coordinates) nor a full summary of the walking session results as proposed when using the shiny app.…”

“…A third population was studied: patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) with monitoring of physical activity (number of steps and stops, distance travelled). The proposed algorithm, developed in [30,31], was used for data processing. It is worth mentioning that no specific activities were recommended.…”
