Comparison of Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Properties for Ginkgo biloba and Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) from Egypt

Abstract: The widespread use of medicinal plants for health purposes has increased dramatically due to their great importance to the public health. In this study levels of phenolic, flavonoid contents of Ginkgo biloba and Rosmarinus officinalis from Egypt were determined. HPLC was used to identify and quantify the phenolic compounds in selected plants. The plant extracts were evaluated for their antioxidant activities using various antioxidant methodologies, (i) scavenging of free radicals using 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhy… Show more

“…Great numbers of the population are exposed to acrylamide toxicity as it formed during baking, grilling, or frying of starchy foods [ 8 ]. Although the oxidative stress of acrylamide in the central nervous systems has been reported [ 31 ], its effect on the neurons developments takes little attention in spite of its crossing the placental barrier [ 32 33 ] and expressed in milk during lactation [ 34 ]. As a powerful phenolic natural agent, rosemary possessing a protective activity on nervous system [ 16 ].…”

“…The oxidative stress is defined as the imbalance between oxidants and antioxidants in favor of the oxidants potentially leading to damage in human cells. Physiologically, antioxidants play a major role in preventing the formation of free radicals, which are responsible for many harmful oxidative processes [50]. Antioxidants may be synthetic or of natural source [51].…”

“…Thus, it is especially important for the intervention against acrylamide toxicity to explore the bioactive compounds that can effectively ameliorate oxidative stress. Quercetin is one of the most frequently studied dietary flavonoids, distributed in vegetables, fruits and many other dietary sources (Bhatt and Flora 2009;El-Beltagi and Badawi 2013). Quercetin possesses various biological functions including, anti-inflammatory, anti-coagulation, oxygen radical-scavenging activities (Yu et al 2013).…”
