Comparison of Antioxidant Capacities ofGanoderma lucidum(Curtis) P. Karst andFunalia trogii(Berk.) Bondartsev & Singer by Using DifferentIn VitroMethods

Abstract: The aim of the study was to investigate antioxidant activities of Ganoderma lucidum and Funalia trogii. Ethanol and water crude extracts from G. lucidum and F. trogii were investigated for their antioxidant capacity in some different assays, namely, the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, metal chelating activity against ferrous ions, and plasma lipid peroxidation inhibitory. In addition, the amounts of total phenol, ascorbic acid, b-carotene, and lycopene components in the extrac… Show more

“…Total phenolic contents of the different solvent extracts were estimated by a colorimetric assay based on the method described by Singleton and Rossi [16], with some modification. In our experiment, gallic acid was taken as standard [17]. 0.1 mL of the extracts (hexane extracts, chloroform extract, ethyl acetate extract, and methanol extract; 1 mg/mL concentration) were added to 0.2 mL of 50% Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and it was left for 3 minutes to complete the reaction and then after adding 1 mL aqueous solution of 2% Na2CO3, the mixture was incubated over 45 minutes at room temperature.…”

“…The other fungal species in this study, Ganoderma lucidum , contains many bioactive compounds amongst which triterpenes have displayed antioxidant effects and exert a scavenging action on free radicals (superoxide, peroxyl, DPPH) in vitro [41, 42]. It is noteworthy that some differences between European or Chinese strains and sporophores have been registered [43, 44].…”

“…The administration of extracts of triterpenes for 1 month has been shown to enhance the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase, GPX in mice, in vivo [41, 42]. Even at low concentrations, triterpenes have been found to be effective in preventing DNA damage and in reducing apoptosis.…”

“…Total phenolic content of the chloroform extract was analyzed using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent according to the method of Singleton and Rossi [15] using gallic acid as standard, with some modifications [16]. The extract solution was mixed with 0.2 ml of 50% Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and allowed to react for 3 min, and 1 ml aqueous solution of 2% Na 2 CO 3 was added.…”
