Comparison of Artemisia annua Bioactivities between Traditional Medicine and Chemical Extracts

Abstract: The present work investigates the efficacy of using Artemisia annua in traditional medicine in comparison with chemical extracts of its bioactive molecules. In addition, the effects of location (Egypt and Jericho) on the bioactivities of the plant were investigated. The results showed that water extracts of Artemisia annua from Jericho have stronger antibacterial activities than organic solvent extracts. In contrast, water and organic solvent extracts of the Artemisia annua from Egypt do not have anti-bacteria… Show more

“…Medicinal plants have been used to treat various human diseases and recently, there has been wide spread interest in botanical medicines (Nagreeb et al, 2013). According to the world health organization (WHO) more than 80% of the world population relies on traditional medicine for their primary health care needs (Vashit and Jundal, 2012).…”

“…For a long time, the therapeutic properties of various medicinal plants have been used to treat various human diseases and recently, there has been widespread interest in botanical medicines (1,2). It has been estimated that between 60-90% of the population of developing countries use traditional and herbal medicines almost exclusively and consider them to be a normal part of primary healthcare (3).…”

“…Although in most cases their efficacy and mechanisms of action have not been tested scientifically, these simple medicinal preparations often mediate beneficial responses due to their active chemical constituents (4). Moreover, the search for plants with antimicrobial activity has grown in importance during the recent years, due to a growing concern about the increase in the rate of infection caused by antibiotic-resistant microorganisms (1)(2)(3)(4)(5). Although the advances brought by technology has made life easier for people, many are still looking for better alternatives such as medicinal plants.…”
