“…Stage IV gastric signet ring cell carcinoma has long been considered to have worse survival rates compared with other types of adenocarcinoma . Previous studies reported that gastric SRCC had high proportion of patients with poorly differentiated grade, younger age and female gender, which was consistent with the clinicopathological characteristics identified in our study. As to metastasis, the mechanism behind the formation of signet ring cell carcinoma may contribute to its unique features.…”

“…Adenocarcinomas represent the majority of gastric cancers, while signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) is a poorly differentiated subtype of gastric carcinoma with unique clinical characteristics and poor survival rates . Previous studies indicated that gastric SRCC has different risk factors compared to non‐SRCC gastric cancer (NOS) types, including older age, female gender, smoking, obesity and American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) IV stage . Pathologically, gastric SRCC consists of scattered malignant cells containing abundant intracytoplasmic mucin, and is associated with rapid growth and diffuse infiltration of surrounding tissues .…”

“…In the present study, we focused on group-3 patients (more advanced stage) for GALNT14 genotype and clinicopathological factors analysis. In clinicopathological factors analysis, under Cox proportional hazard multivariate models, patients with large tumor size, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis and perineural invasion had poorer OS, which was in consistent with previously studies 22 , 28 , 29 . Additionally, we discovered that GALNT14-rs9679162”TT” genotype was also associated with poorer OS in group-3 patients.…”

“…The prevalence of gastric SRCC is 16.8-35.5 % among gastric cancer patients 19 - 21 and the incidence is increasing in recent decade 2 . Although it has been established that gastric cancer with pathological characteristics of signet ring cells harbors a significantly poorer outcome when compared with other types of gastric cancer 4 , 22 , 23 , the prognostic factors within gastric SRCCs themselves remain poorly defined. In the present study, it was found that a large proportion of gastric SRCC patients were diagnosed in early stages, with 39.48% in stage I and 14.70% in stage IIA ( Supplementary Table 1 ).…”

“…Regarding early SRCC, most studies have reported that this tumor type has less risk of lymph node metastasis and favorable prognosis compared with other types, 4 on the contrary other studies reported that SRCC had an unfavorable risk of lymph node metastasis, and thus a worse prognosis after surgical resection, compared to other GC types. 5,6 Moreover in advanced GC, SRCC was reported as an independent predictor of poor prognosis in multivariate analysis in some studies, 6,7 while it was not significant in other studies also performed by multivariate analysis after adjustment for the stage since the presence of SRCC are more frequently found at an advanced stage in GC than in other GC types. 8,9,10,11,12 While the incidence of GC has decreased worldwide in recent decades, the incidence of SRCC is constantly increasing in Asia, United States and Europe, accounting for 8% to 30% of GC cases in recent studies.…”
