Comparison of combustion and Kjeldahl methods for determination of nitrogen in oilseeds

Abstract: The recent development of combustion-type nitrogen analyzem capable of h~ relatively huge samples with seml-automatic operation offers a potential replacement for the Kjeldahl method for direct determination of nitrogen. Nitrogen analyses for canola seed, flmmeed, sunflower seed, mustard seed and sofoeans on a LECO (St. Jeseph, MI) FPA28 Nitrogea Analyzer were evaluated against results from the Grain Research Laboratory's (GRL) Kjeldald system. The nitrogen analyzer gave significantly high~ values than the Kje… Show more

“…They were then rinsed with distilled water to remove any traces of potassium permanganate. About 20 g of seeds were soaked in 60 ml distilled water for 4 h. Then, the excess water was drained, sample further rinsed with distilled water, seeds placed in a single layer on filter paper in sterile petridishes and placed in the Seed Germinator (Indosaw India) at the 25°C, 90% RH for 72 h. as per the method of Agrahar-Murugkar and Jha (2009) Daun and DeClercq (1994).…”

“…Needles were dried at 60 8C to constant weight and then milled to pass a 40 mesh screen. Foliar nitrogen and carbon concentrations were then determined for each tree by analyzing duplicate aliquots (10 mg) of the foliage samples with a Carlo Erba Series II C:H:N analyzer Model NA1500 (Carlo Erba Elantech, Lakewood, NJ) (Daun and DeClerq, 1994).…”

“…Foliar nitrogen concentration was determined for each plant by analyzing duplicate aliquots (10 mg) of the foliage samples described above with a Carbo Erba CNH analyzer, model NA 1500 (Daun and DeClerq 1994). Foliar nitrogen concentration was expressed on both a dry mass (mg/g) and leaf area (mg/cm 2 ) basis.…”
