Comparison of composition and antifungal activity ofArtemisia argyi Lévl. et Vantinflorescence essential oil extracted by hydrodistillation and supercritical carbon dioxide

Abstract: Essential oil of Artemisia argyi Lévl. et Vant inflorescence was obtained by supercritical CO(2) extraction and hydrodistillation. The oil was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry to characterize its components and was also tested for antifungal activity. A total of 61 compounds were identified in the hydrodistilled oil. The major components were 1,8-cineole (4.46%), borneol (3.58%), terpinol (10.18%), spathulenol (10.03%), caryophyllene oxide (6.51%), juniper camphor (8.74%), Camazulene (2.05%), a… Show more

“…1 H NMR spectra were obtained using a sweep width of 11 990.41 Hz over 65 536 data points and multiplied by an exponential factor corresponding to a 0.30 Hz line broadening prior to Fourier transformation. 13 C spectra were obtained using a sweep width of 31.847 Hz. Data processing was carried out on the SGI workstation using Bruker (DRX 400) micro-programs and the XWIN-NMR 3.1 version program for Windows XP.…”

“…10 Borneol is a monoterpene commonly isolated from plants of different genera. [11][12][13] Borneol can also be produced by the reduction of camphor, which is used in traditional medicine for analgesia and anesthesia. In addition, this compound inhibits rat bone resorption 14 , by inhibiting the formation of osteoclasts 15 , and causes microtubule depolymerization.…”

“…Tanideh et al (2014) also observed increased stimulation of collagen production by topical gel Hypericum perforatum L., which helped repair the wounds, closing areas of damaged oral mucosa in the animals. This effect may be associated with the bactericidal action of borneol, which prevents secondary infection by fungi and bacteria, promoting reepithelialization and standardization of collagen fiber content (Tabanca et al, 2001;Wenqiang et al, 2006). no differences were observed between the two borneol concentrations.…”

“…Probably there is a correlation between the antifungal activity of the studied oils and their main constituents. Corroborating this hypothesis, previous studies have demonstrated that the essential oils in which spathulenol and caryophyllene oxide are the main compounds have inhibitory activity on filamentous fungi species (FARAG et al, 2004;WENQIANG et al, 2006). These compounds must have inhibitory activity against Candida species too, because are abundant in all essential oils tested in this study.…”
