Comparison of Direct Medical Care Costs Between Erosive Reflux Disease and Non-erosive Reflux Disease in Korean Tertiary Medical Center

Abstract: Background/AimsGastroesophageal reflux disease is one of the most common and frequent chronic disease requiring considerable cost. We investigated the medical care costs in the erosive reflux disease (ERD) and non-erosive reflux disease (NERD).MethodsThe risk factors and the direct medical care costs were analyzed retrospectively in the ERD (178 patients) and NERD (183 patients) groups for a follow up period of 2 years.ResultsLogistic regression analysis showed that the ERD was more frequent in the groups of m… Show more

“…These results suggest that not only organic, but also other causes, such as visceral sensitivity, esophageal motility, and psychological factor could influence NERD, which has been proposed in other studies as well 38-40. Previously, we reported that patients with NERD visited emergency center more often and they spent more medical cost than patients with ERD 41. GIS is the scoring system not only for GERD symptom, but also for GERD symptom-induced disturbance in daily life, with consideration of frequency.…”

“…Recently, the direct medical costs of GERD during one-year follow-up were reported in Korea; the results showed that the erosive reflux disease (ERD) and non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) are similar [17]. That is, the annual direct medical costs of ERD and NERD were $331.3 and $352.2, respectively [17], which are much lower than the costs of PUD in the present study.…”

“…Health-care systems and individuals incur economic costs for physician visits, medications, and procedures. [28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35] Objective measures such as oesophageal pH monitoring or endoscopy can be used to diagnose gastro-oesophageal reflux disease or its effect on oesophageal mucosa, but these procedures are invasive and can miss cases with fluctuating course. Multiple expert groups have endorsed the use of clinical history and response to therapy in making a clinical diagnosis.…”
