Comparison of Effects on Gene Expression Activity of Low-Molecular-Weight Lychee Fruit Polyphenol (Oligonol®), Adenosine, and Minoxidil in Human Dermal Papilla Cells

Abstract: AbstrakBackground: Oligonol ® (OLG) is raw materials for functional foods or cosmetics which contains low-molecular-weight polyphenols derived from lychee fruit (Litchi chinensis Sonn.). It has been reported to many functions such as antiinflammatory and anti-oxidants. Aim: In this study, with the aim of exploring new functionalities of OLG on the scalp and hair growth, we investigate i ts effect on human dermal papilla cells (HDPC) by comparing it with adenosine and minoxidil at the genetic level. Method: OLG… Show more

“…The research on herbs and active constituents as hair growth promoters has been driven by their less toxicity, easy availability, low‐cost, patient compliance and more than one mode of biochemical action . Specific effects of herbal extracts, polyherbal formulations, flavonoids and natural compounds on DPCs have been examined . In vivo hair growth promoting effects as proof of concept are also mentioned.…”

“…KGF and HGF have been reported as peripherally secreted growth factors that promote hair growth [31,32]. KGF/FGF-7 was 68.70 pg/ml in the control group and 97.52 pg/ml in the minoxidil 30 μM treatment group, which was 41.94% higher in the minoxidil-treated group (Fig.…”

“…Growth factors, such as fibroblast growth factor-1 (FGF-1), -2, -7, and -10 and epidermal growth factor (EGF), also promote cell cycle proliferation, improve hair loss, and promote hair cell regeneration, both in and outside the body [31,32]. TGF-β1 is known for inducing hair loss by interfering with hair follicle growth and causing entrance into the catagen stage faster than normal [33− 35].…”
