Comparison of enamel hardness after dental bleaching agent application strawberry gel and carbamide peroxide 10%

Abstract: Objective: Carbamide peroxide 10% is commonly used in home bleaching procedure. Effectiveness of carbamide peroxide bleaching process as a home bleaching has no successor yet, but its use is still being debated due to the effects on oral cavity. Strawberries are one of natural ingredients that currently used to whiten decolorized teeth because it contains ellagic acid and malic acid. On contrary, malic acid is said to be involved in the process of erosion. The aim of this study was to compare tooth enamel hard… Show more

“…All these effects on the enamel could be explained by the presence of substances such as ascorbic acid 48 and malic acid, 49 which can bind calcium to the enamel, causing porosities in the enamel crystals, and therefore, erosion, which could cause a rougher surface, thus facilitating bacterial adhesion. 28,30,47 We also found the presence of sucrose, glucose and fructose50. Streptococcus mutans produces glucans from sucrose to increase bacterial accumulation, 15 which would explain the increased bacterial adherence to the tooth surface.…”

“…It is controversial in the literature whether bleaching gel has an effect on enamel microhardness. Previous studies reported a decrease in enamel microhardness after using 10% CP solutions [ 57 ] and 10% CP hydrogel [ 14 ]. In contrast, other studies reported no change of enamel microhardness of using 10% CP hydrogel [ 58 , 59 ].…”

“…22 Based on the average graph in Figure 1, it shows that the change in tooth color resulting from 10% carbamide peroxide using the smearing technique was higher than in the group that applied 100% watermelon extract using the smearing technique. This result is of course because carbamide peroxide is a bleaching agent that is usually used in home-bleaching techniques 8 .…”

“…The effectiveness of the material used depends on the concentration of the material, where the higher the concentration, the faster it will produce whitening results 7 . The reason for using carbamide peroxide as a home bleaching agent is because it is believed to be safer than hydrogen peroxide 8 . However, in reality 10% carbamide peroxide still has an effect.…”
