Comparison of Energy Efficiency Indicators of Road Transportation for Modeling Environmental Sustainability in “Green” Circular Industry

Abstract: The Finnish forest industry is committed to applying novel technologies for increasing carbon-neutral development and environmental sustainability in “green” circular industry. This study compares the energy efficiency indicators of road freight transportation. Additionally, effects of four mass limits of vehicle combinations are analyzed after a three-year adaptation process that took place in a wood procurement region of 100% renewable resources. The wood-based energy efficiency model (load’s wood energy/fos… Show more

“…Transportation cost contributes a significant portion in the total cost over the forest product supply chain. Selection of an optimal mode of transportation and uses of local biofuel can increase the financial efficiency while reducing the amount of carbon emission directly and indirectly [52]. However, consideration of such attributes was beyond the scope of our study.…”

“…Transportation and logistics companies with a vehicle fleet in goods road transportation have the aim to realize all planned transportation tasks in the observed time, simultaneously generating as low costs as possible so as to make a bigger profit. As fuel consumption for the realization of transportation tasks has a significant share in costs [1][2][3], an increase in the energy efficiency of a vehicle fleet is one of the significant measures for achieving the goal of the considered companies [4][5][6] and is yet increasingly gaining in importance when the environment is observed since road transportation has a dominant share in final energy consumption in the transportation sector [7][8][9].…”
