Strategic, tactical, and operation-level forest management plans are commonly formulated by forest planners following even-flow yield principles. Although strategic planning ensures a sustained supply of timber over the long term, it disregards individual mills’ requirements, which leads to discrepancy between supply and demand. We hypothesize that a value-based timber allocation decision, which accounts for individual mills’ demands during tactical level planning, reduces such discrepancy by increasing value over the entire supply chain. Three types of linear programming models were constructed: Model A—status quo volume-maximization model, Model B—supply chain net present value-maximization (NPV) model, and Model C—a novel approach with sub-models embedded that maximize the NPV of individual mills in the allocation decision. Our results showed that only 58% of the annual allowable cut was profitable and the mean net revenue per harvested area was $2455 ha−1 using Model A. The respective values using Models B and C were 64% and $3890 ha−1 and 96% and $4040 ha−1, respectively, showing that Model C generated the highest net revenue for all mills. Such a method of value-based sequential optimization (Model C) will be crucial in sustainable use of forest products and sustaining future bioeconomy, particularly for managing mixed species stands that contain timber suitable for manufacturing a wide range of products with different market values.

Evaluation of the influence of terrain and traffic road conditions on the driver’s driving performances by applying machine learning

In this paper, research is done in the influence of different terrain and traffic conditions on road sections on the driver?s driving performances, i.e. on the car energy efficiency and CO2 emission. A methodology aimed at determining to which extent unfavorable traffic and/or terrain conditions on a road section contribute to the driver?s worse driving performances, and also to determine when the driver?s aggressive driving style is responsible for greater fuel consumption and greater CO2 emission is proposed. In order to apply the proposed methodology, a research study was carried out in a cargo transportation company and 12 drives who drove the same vehicle on five different road sections were selected. As many as 284 014 of the instances of the data about the defined parameters of the road section and the driver?s driving style were collected, based on which and with the help of machine learning a prediction of the scores for the road section and the scores for the driver?s driving style was performed. The obtained results have shown that the proposed methodology is a useful tool for managers enabling them to simply and quickly determine potential room for increasing the energy efficiency of the vehicle fleet and decreasing CO2 emission.

Exploring the regional differences of transport carbon emission efficiency (TCEE) and accurately identifying its influencing factors are crucial for achieving carbon neutrality in transport industry as soon as possible. The TCEE of 30 provinces in China from 2003 to 2018 was measured, and its spatial imbalance and influencing factors were determined. The following conclusions are drawn. First, previous studies have shown that the TCEE is increasing at an overall low level with significant regional differences. Second, the total regional differences of China’s TCEE presents a trend of rising first and then falling, and the intra-regional differences are the main source of total differences. Third, this study shows that certain factors, such as the economic level, transport structure, energy structure, and technical level, significantly influenced the TCEE, but there were notable spatial-temporal differences in each factor. Finally, targeted and differentiated carbon emissions reduction policies were proposed for transport departments to realize carbon neutrality as rapidly as possible.
