“…The number of cats which had an episode of recurrence within the follow‐up period (5 weeks) was 29.4% (5/17) in the test group and 78.6% (11/14) in the control group. These results are in line with the results previously reported in a controlled clinical trial of Kruger et al (), where 36% (4/11) of the test group cats and 64% (9/14) of the control group cats had an episode of recurrence of FIC within the research period.…”

“…However, recurrence of clinical signs after variable periods of time is very common. Up to 65% of cats with acute FIC will experience one or more recurrences within one year (Defauw et al, ; Dorsch, Zellner, Schulz, Sauter‐Louis, & Hartmann, ; Gunn‐Moore & Shenoy, ; Kruger et al, ; Markwell et al, ). In several published studies, the age, reproductive state, body weight, underlying diseases, type of food and environmental stressors have been associated with increased risk for (re)occurrence of FIC (Buffington et al, ; Buffington, Westropp, Westropp, Chew, & Bolus, ; Cameron, Casey, Casey, Bradshaw, Waran, & Gunn‐Moore, ; Gerber et al, ; Lekcharoensuk et al, ).…”

“…These results have been widely interpreted to suggest an increased water intake and a reduced urine specific gravity are beneficial in cats with FIC, perhaps by encouraging more frequent urination and by diluting the urine which itself can be irritant to a compromised bladder wall. In a more recent study (Kruger and others 2015), cats with FIC were randomised to be fed either a therapeutic veterinary diet designed to prevent cystitis (wet or dry formulation of Hill’s c/d diet) or a wet or dry formulation of a diet formulated to represent a typical commercial maintenance diet, for up to 12 months. Although overall recurrence of clinical signs was not significantly different between the groups, cats fed the therapeutic diet had significantly lower numbers of days where clinical signs were observed suggesting a positive benefit.…”
