In this paper, we propose an efficient system approach to improve the power efficiency of dual-input Doherty power amplifier (DIDPA) with maintaining its linearity level. An auto-tuning process based on a hybrid heuristic search control (HHSC) is applied to optimally define DIDPA configuration by optimizing its free parameters. Digital predistortion (DPD) is then integrated to linearize DIDPA using an optimal reduced-complexity model based on the segmentation approach. An optimal pruning process of the free parameters, based on hill-climbing (HC) heuristics, is proposed to reduce the HHSC complexity in order to refine the optimal DIDPA configuration. The system approach has been approved by experimental results, in different scenarios, using an LTE 20 MHz signal with a PAPR of 8 dB. DPD linearization under optimal DIDPA configuration improved linearity using a low-complex model with only 30 coefficients, which exhibited an error vector magnitude (EVM) of 2.5% and an adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) of −50 dB at an averaged output power of 34 dBm. By updating the cost function coefficients and pruning the free parameters, DIDPA exhibited an EVM of 3%, an ACPR of −50 dB, and a drain efficiency of 47% at an average output power of 39 dBm.

In this paper, we propose a novel technique of digital predistortion (DPD) for dual-band power amplifiers (PA) based on periodically nonuniform sampling (PNS) theory. In contrast to conventional 2D-DPD models, the proposed PNS-DPD has only a single input which can largely reduce the model complexity. We fold the two stimuli with aliasing and feed it to a simple single-band DPD model. The desired predistorted signals are reconstructed from aliased DPD output through the PNS theory. Compared with conventional multi-input models which include numerous intermodulation products of the input signals, the complexity of the proposed single-input PNS-DPD model is hugely decreased. The model coefficients of the proposed PNS-DPD can be easily extracted with conventional direct or indirect learning architecture. We experimentally evaluate the proposed DPD on a test bench and compare it with other DPD techniques in the literature. The implementation complexity can be reduced by over 30% and the identification complexity is also largely reduced.

The power efficiency and the linearity of a power amplifier (PA) depend on its operating point. A high efficiency generally corresponds to poor linearity. To optimize the efficiency/linearity trade-off, crest factor reduction (CFR) techniques are classically implemented along with digital predistortion (DPD) to control the PA operating point. Joint CFR/DPD can be realized with a single model so that the running complexity of the CFR is negligible. This paper fully explores the clipping-andbank-filtering (CABF) method for joint CFR/DPD and extends it to the multi-carrier case with validation on experimental results. Compared with conventional approaches, it provides either better linearization performance or lower complexity at the same PA operating point. The study is completed with a discussion on the choice of windows in the filter bank. The proposed CABF-based joint CFR/DPD model is then experimentally evaluated on a test bench with two PAs using single-carrier and 2-carrier 20 MHz long term evolution (LTE) signals as the stimulus.
