“…The method of using heat mount detectors, even though superior to visual observation, has some disadvantages. I t was reported by Baker (1965) that some detectors were rubbed off and some were activated by cows mounting each other thereby indicating false positives. Also the detectors were costly.…”

“…Twice a day visual observation of cows for about 20 minutes duration each has been the conventional method of oestrus detection. However, by utilising this visual method alone it is possible to miss oestrus in some cows, especially Bos indicus types, which exhibit weak or short oestrous periods, often at night (Baker 1967 (Ron 1969), epididymal transection (Smith 1967). penectomy (Straub and Kendrick 1965;Frazer 1973), lateral deviation of the penis and prepuce (Weissenberg and Cohen, 1971; Royes and Bivin, 1973 This paper describes a technique which offers a simple, quick and reliable method of preparing a teaser bull with no loss of libido and n o risk of spread of venereal diseases.…”

“…), but these do not appear to meet requirements for all conditions in New Zealand. A heat-mount detector attached to the cow and which changes from white to red when pressure is maintained for 4 or 5 seconds has been tested by Baker (1965) and at the Whatawhata Hill Country Research Station. Although this was better than visual methods for recording oestrus.…”
