Comparison of Heyman packing and Cathetron afterloading methods in the treatment of endometrial cancer

Abstract: The five-year survival and the complication rate were evaluated in 307 patients with endometrial carcinoma treated from 1966 to 1977. The distribution of the patients into clinical stages I, II, III and IV was 68.7, 20.8, 6.5 and 3.9%, respectively. In stage I 87.2% and in stage II 67.2% of the patients were operated on. All patients received oral medroxyprogesterone acetate for two years, and all patients with stage I or II disease were also irradiated, mostly intracavitary before operation. The crude 5-year … Show more

“…One of them contracted recurrent cancer 8 months after operation. Six patients responded to cytotoxic chemotherapy by stabilization of the disease, which was transient in two cases (progression at 7 and 8 months) and which still continues in four patients at the end of the follow-up (16,18,19, and 40 months). In 12 patients, the malignancy progressed continuously.…”

“…One of the most difficult techniques to replace with an afterloading alternative has been the classic Heyman packing method for the uterine corpus (15)(16)(17)(18). Tandem sources have been considered inferior to the arrangement of multiple radium sources in the packing technique that 'balloon out' the cavity and Accepted for publication 7 March 1989. produce a good contact between the tumor and the radium sources (19-21).…”
