Serum concentrations of CA 125 and aminoterminal propeptide of type III procollagen (PIIINP) in patients with endometrial carcinoma

Abstract: Serum CA 125 (a marker of coelomic epithelial cells) and aminoterminal propeptide of type III procollagen (PIIINP; an indicator of collagen metabolism) concentrations were measured in 148 patients with endometrial carcinoma. An initial serum concentration of CA 125 was pathologic in 17% of the patients, the frequency of abnormal values being higher (P = 0.0001) in advanced (63%) than in early disease (10%). The serum PIIINP concentration was increased in 35% of the patients and more often (P less than 0.05) so… Show more

“…Before 'second-look' laparotomy of 27 patients with complete clinical response to cytotoxic chemotherapy, PIIINP and CA 125 simultaneously pre- Circulating PIIINP in other malignancies Any biochemical marker related to the stromal component is of necessity not specific for any single type of malignancy, since exactly the same chemical components are found in the matrix of normal tissues. Thus, elevated PIIINP concentrations can also be found in endometrial (16) and cervical (17) carcinoma (Figs 2, 4). Although they are less frequent than in ovarian malignancies, they are present more often than increased concentrations of CA 125 in these diseases.…”

“…The measurement of the procollagen propeptides in serum or other body fluids has been employed in several other clinical conditions, including growth, different malignancies, bone diseases and under various treatments (8,(21)(22)(23). Since the concentrations of the procollagen propeptides in body fluids in many cases seem to reflect the local collagen synthesis, we developed a method to estimate it in human skin in vivo.…”
