Comparison of Immunoblotting and Indirect Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay Using Different Antigen Preparations for Diagnosing Early Lyme Disease

Abstract: We compared immunoblotting and indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using different antigen preparations to test for antibody to Borrelia burgdorferi in patients with early Lyme disease. With immunoblotting, 16 (53%) of 30 patients had positive tests in acute-phase sera and 25 (83%) had them in convalescent-phase sera. Among 64 controls, false-positive results were obtained in only three individuals with syphilis and in one hospitalized patient with renal allograft rejection. Among the patients w… Show more

“…From July 1990 to July 2006, the IIER sent 171 serum and/or CSF samples with suspicion of BYS to LIM-17 HCFMUSP Lab, to perform serological tests for B. burgdorferi, through the Indirect immunosorbent assay (ELISA) 29 and a modified Western Blotting (WB) 18,40 .…”

“…Western blotting (WB) -Electrophoresis and immunoblotting were done as previously described with modifications (Grodzick & Steere 1988, Joppert et al 2001. Briefly, 600 µg of B. bovis antigens reduced with SDS, were electrophorezed (Mini-Protean II System, Bio Rad) on a 10% acrylamide gel.…”
