Abstract: Although the mitotic index in patients with diabetes was slightly lower, keratinization in the gingival tissues for both groups was essentially identical.

“…PCNA concentration is directly correlated with the proliferative state of the cell: increasing through the G1 phase, peaking at G1/S phase interphase, decreasing through G2 phase, and reaching low levels in G2/M interphase and M phase 40,41 . PCNA expression is therefore believed to be an indicator of cell proliferation and, hence, has been used to determine the proliferative potential of gingival tissues 42‐47 . In this study, PCNA expression was detected and appeared higher ( P <0.05) in the CsA groups than in the control group in both in vivo and in vitro studies (Figs.…”

“…The advantage in using PCNA is that it stains the proliferating cell even though they are in various stages of cell cycle and in various layers of epithelium [6]. Various researchers used PCNA for evaluation of epithelial cell proliferation and they considered PCNA as a reliable indicator of proliferation [15,16]. This study was the first to assess epithelial cell proliferation in gingival biopsies of Normal, Aggressive and Chronic Periodontitis patients using PCNA.…”

“…The Type 1 DM is the juvenile onset type which affects young people. Diabetes-related abnormalities include impaired hepatic glucose uptake, alterations in immune function, early cellular senescence and premature apoptosis (Crofford, 1995;Acikgoz et al, 2004). The oral environment is characterized by the presence of moisture, warmth and a constant reservoir of micro organisms and so, individuals with diabetes are at increased risk for oral diseases such as gingivitis and periodontal disease.…”
