Comparison of metabolic syndrome prevalence using eight different definitions: a critical approach

Abstract: Since the prevalence of the MS varied widely in overweight children and adolescents depending on the proposed definition used, an internationally accepted uniform definition of the MS is necessary to compare different populations and studies.

“…Multiple sets of criteria have been proposed and used. 32,33 We elected to use the adolescent adaptation of the ATP-III criteria because these are based on the NCEP ATP-III definition of MetS in adults. 1 MetS was defined as having at least 3 of the following: BMI z score ≥1.645, fasting glucose ≥100 mg/dL, fasting triglycerides ≥110 mg/dL, HDL ≤40 mg/dL, and systolic or diastolic BP exceeding the 90th percentile for height, age, and gender.…”

“…5 The prevalence of MS varies widely across several studies, and that is due to the different diagnostic criteria used. Reinehr et al 6 compared the prevalence of MS in children and adolescents using eight different definitions.…”

“…The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a clustering of risk factors for CVD and T2DM (7), however, a 56 major limitation is that there is no globally accepted definition for use in paediatric populations and prevalence 57 values ranged between 6 and 39% in overweight youths according to eight different definitions (8). It is 58 hypothesised that insulin resistance may be the underlying cause of MetS (7) and viscerally located fat has a 59 3 proatherogenic function due to its metabolic and anatomical characteristics that favour insulin resistance and 60 proinflammatory and procoagulant states (7).…”
