Comparison of methionine sources around requirement levels using a methionine efficacy method in 0 to 28 day old broilers

Abstract: The addition of methionine in the poultry feed industry is still facing the relative efficacy dilemma between DL-methionine (DLM) and hydroxy-methionine (HMTBA). The aim of this study was to compare the effect of dietary DLM and HMTBA on broiler performance at different levels of total sulfur amino acids (TSAA). The treatments consisted of a basal diet without methionine addition, and 4 increasing methionine doses for both sources resulting in TSAA/Lysine ratios from 0.62 to 0.73 in the starter phase and 0.59 … Show more

“…Calculated from the calculated ileal digestibility values of the ingredients, and adjusted for 86.3% of dry matter. e Analysed methionine equivalent (Total Met + HMTBA) and cystine levels (Agostini et al, 2015) A C C E P T E D M A N U S C R I P T 60.1 60.6 60.5 1.9 0.86 a Pigs were fed either a control diet (CONT) adequate in Met or a HMTBA-supplemented diets with calculated value of Met being respectively, 3 times (Met3 group) or 5 times greater (Met5 group), than that in the CONT diet. Results are presented as means for the 3 dietary treatments (n = 15 pigs/group) and Residual standard deviation (Rsd) of the analysis of variance.…”

“…DL-methionine (DLM) and DL-2-hydroxy-4-methylthio-butanoic acid (HMTBa) are 2 commonly used Met additives (Agostini et al., 2015). DL-methionine and HMTBa are structurally different molecules with different physiological characteristics (Tang et al., 2011, Zhang et al., 2016), and have different optimum dietary levels in poultry.…”

“…The dose-response curve with the best goodness of fit was linear for HMTBA and quadratic for DLM (Vazquez-Anon et al, 2006). Therefore, HMTBA is suggested to outperform DLM when TSAA values are above requirement (Agostini et al, 2016;Vazquez-Anon et al, 2006 Values with different superscripts in the same column differ significantly (p < .05).…”
