Comparison of mycobacteria growth indicator tube with BACTEC 460 for detection and recovery of mycobacteria from clinical specimens

Abstract: We compared the Mycobacteria Growth Indicator Tube (MGIT) system with the BACTEC 460 (B460) and Lowenstein Jensen (LJ) systems for the recovery of mycobacteria (acid-fast bacteria [AFB]) from 1,441 clinical specimens. Excluding 13 isolates of Mycobacterium gordonae, 178 significant AFB isolates were recovered from 113 patients. Isolates (119) of the Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) accounted for 67% of all isolates, while isolates (30) of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTB) accounted for 17% of isola… Show more

“…Detection times recorded for the two culture systems were shown not to be significantly different throughout this study. This is in agreement with the findings of previous studies to compare the performance of MGIT and BACTEC for the culture of mycobacteria from specimens other than milk (Badak et al. 1997; Casal et al.…”

“…The manually read MGIT tube is a non‐radiometric alternative to the BACTEC 460TB system and its performance in comparison with this system for the culture of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and M. avium – M. intracellulare complex from clinical specimens was extensively investigated when it was first introduced (Badak et al. 1997; Casal et al.…”

“…In one of them [18] the similarity of data is particularly striking when results on smear‐positive samples (as were the majority of ours) are compared. In the other [19], characterized by a high prevalence of M. avium complex, results closer to ours are represented by the M. tuberculosis isolations. In a further study too [20], where a limited number of respiratory specimens were tested in parallel with MGIT and Löwenstein–Jensen, the results presented are in agreement with ours.…”

“…Several evaluations of MGIT in comparison with alternative media have been recently reported; one of them [17], being restricted to blood samples, is not directly comparable with our study. Two papers [18,19] which tested in parallel MGIT with BACTEC and solid media gave results compatible with ours. In one of them [18] the similarity of data is particularly striking when results on smear‐positive samples (as were the majority of ours) are compared.…”

“…The major liquid medium has a Middlebrook 7H9 Broth base combined with a growth indicator system (Mycobacteria Growth Indicator Tube, MB/BacT). 15,16 Three representative solid media are the egg-based L€ owenstein-Jensen, Ogawa medium ( Fig. 3), or Middlebrook 7H10/7H11 agar medium.…”
