ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to examine the effect of designs using different esthetic dental proportions made with a digital smile design program on the esthetic perception of individuals of different ages, genders and educational statuses.Materials and MethodsDifferent smile designs were made on facial photos taken of a female and male model using a smile design program. Four different dental proportions (golden proportion [GPR], golden percentage [GPE]), Preston proportion [P] and recurring esthetic dental proportion [RED]) and two different tooth shapes (oval and square) were used. Images with 16 different smile designs were presented to 4th and 5th‐year students of a faculty of dentistry, dentists, specialist dentists and laypersons for scoring.ResultsThe gender of the participants did not affect the scores given (p > 0.05), and participants over the age of 30 and lay people had higher scores (p < 0.05). The GPR design was scored lower than RED when all designs were subdivided by tooth shape and gender (p < 0.001).ConclusionsThe esthetic perceptions of people of different ages and dentistry education levels may differ from each other. Using the GPR when designing a digital smile may not be suitable for both genders.Clinical SignificanceIf esthetic dental proportions are to be utilized when designing a smile, it may be more appropriate to use the P and RED proportions instead of the GPR. In addition, if the patients whose smiles will be designed are young and have received dental education, it should be considered that their esthetic expectations may be high. Background: A smile is one of the main components of the attractiveness of a person's face. Several things build an aesthetic smile. The aesthetic assessment of a smile is a subjective matter, so each individual has their assessment. The purpose of this study was to determine the student's assessment of the four components of a smile. Method: The research design used in this study was an observational study with a cross-sectional approach with a total of 100 research subjects, which included diploma, bachelor, professional education, master, and postgraduate students. Result:The result obtained from this study showed different results between male and female students. Conclusion:The high smile line was considered by male and female respondents to be aesthetic, and the medium smile line was considered unaesthetic by male respondents and aesthetically for women. The low smile line was considered unaesthetic by both of them. In the smile arc, the parallel smile arc is regarded as an aesthetic smile by both male and female respondents, while the straight smile arc is assessed as an unaesthetic smile by male and female respondents. For male respondents, a smile with a reverse smile arc was assessed as a very unaesthetic smile, while female respondents rated this smile as unaesthetic. In the upper lip curvature aspect, male respondents rated a smile with an upward upper lip curvature as very aesthetic, while female respondents rated it as aesthetic. Both male and female respondents rated Straight upper lip curvature as an aesthetic smile. A smile with downward upper lip curvature is rated as very unaesthetic by male respondents and unaesthetic by female respondents. In the buccal corridor aspect, male and female respondents rated a smile with a narrow and medium buccal corridor as an aesthetic smile. A smile with a wide buccal corridor was rated as very unaesthetic by male respondents, while female respondents rated this smile as unaesthetic.

Identifying alveolar bony fenestration and dehiscence preceding orthodontic treatment, especially arch expansion, is needed. An unrevealed and undiagnosed buccal alveolar bone defect leads to treatment relapse and further loss of bony support. The aim of this study was to determine the extent of posterior alveolar bony dehiscence and fenestration in adults undergoing orthodontic treatment. A total of 20 subjects in the age range 18-35 years were selected for this study randomly and their CBCT records were retrieved from the Department of Orthodontics, Saveetha dental college. All statistical analysis was performed using SPSS. Chi-square test was used to determine the association of extent of fenestrations and dehiscence between males and females. Females presented with wider and extensive dehiscence defects than males (p=0.019, p<0.05). On the other hand, there was a statistically non-significant association of fenestration severity between males and females. (p=0.178, p>0.05) Within the limits of this study, it was observed that females presented with more severe bony alveolar dehiscence than males.
