Comparison of Rebound Tonometer and Goldmann Handheld Applanation Tonometer in Congenital Glaucoma

Abstract: The RBT overestimates the IOP compared with the Perkins tonometer in patients with congenital glaucoma. Differences in readings between the 2 tonometers become larger as the CCT increases.

“…Martinez-de-la-Casa et al (2009), срав-нив тонометры Icare и Перкинса у пациентов с врождённой глаукомой, подтвердили, что Icare завышает результаты измерения также и отно-сительно тонометра Перкинса. Авторы отметили положительную корреляцию между результатом определения ВГД и ЦТР и не наблюдали зави-симости между радиусом кривизны роговицы и длиной переднезадней оси глазного яблока [38]. M.L.…”

“…What was the inter-observer and intra-observer agreement in their measurements? Most importantly, the order in which RT and GAT were performed is not mentioned, and it is not described whether or not the examiner measured IOP with GAT once or if a repeated measurement was made and a mean calculated, as is preferred by several authors [2,3].…”

“…What was the inter-observer and intra-observer agreement in their measurements? Most importantly, the order in which RT and GAT were performed is not mentioned, and it is not described whether or not the examiner measured IOP with GAT once or if a repeated measurement was made and a mean calculated, as is preferred by several authors [2,3].Rebound tomometry (RT) has been found to overestimate IOP compared to GAT when RT is used first but not when used immediately after GAT [4]. This difference may have significant implications in the study by Sinha et al: if RT was consistently used after repeated GAT measurements, then this could account for, at least in part, the large limits of agreement found between the two methods in the higher range of intraocular pressures.…”

“…It has a similar reliability to a Tono-Pen, with a tendency to overestimate IOP in known or suspected glaucoma cases compared with applanation tonometry. [18][19][20][21][22][23][24] Ideally, the eyes should be in the primary position and motionless as pressure readings may be altered by eye movements. Avoid measuring the IOP when using a lid speculum or when the baby is crying or squeezing his or her lids, as all of these may falsely elevate the IOP.…”
