Comparison of solvent extraction and extraction chromatography resin techniques for uranium isotopic characterization in high-level radioactive waste and barrier materials

Abstract: The development of Deep Geological Repositories (DGP) to the storage of high-level radioactive waste (HLRW) is mainly focused in systems of multiple barriers based on the use of clays, and particularly bentonites, as natural and engineered barriers in nuclear waste isolation due to their remarkable properties. Due to the fact that uranium is the major component of HLRW, it is required to go in depth in the analysis of the chemistry of the reaction of this element within bentonites. The determination of uranium… Show more

“…Recently, the contaminants captured from wastewater have become a major challenge, as their significance is extending with increasing industrial activities (Hamoud et al 2014). Various technologies can be used to remove pollutants as, for example, chemical precipitation (Ahn et al 2020), physical treatment like solvent extraction (Brockmeyer et al 2015;Hurtado-Bermúdez et al 2018), adsorption (Abass et al 2021a, b), biosorption (Gupta et al 2019), membrane (Mehta et al 2020), and ion exchange (El-Dessouky et al 2018). Because of the high toxicity of Pb(II) and their widespread presence in the area, lead ions have a particular interest.…”

“…For disposal of HLRW, deep geological disposal is recommended [18]. In this project, clay is proposed as a backfill material to prevent radionuclide migration [19].…”
