Egg laying is an important reproductive behavior of female poultry. Here, we investigated the laying behavior and clutch traits of different goose breeds, specifically, Zhedong white geese ( Anser cygnoides ), Sichuan white geese ( Anser cygnoides ) and Hungarian geese ( Anser anser ). A total of 108 geese in their first laying year were selected. Their laying rhythm was monitored daily by video cameras during the egg-laying period. The results showed that the prenatal behavior included nest hunting, nest site selection and nesting, as well as laying behavior included prenatal crouching, anal contraction until oviposition and postnatal resting. There were some differences in laying times among the 3 breeds. Approximately 70% of the eggs were laid between 03:00 and 12:00 in Zhedong white geese and Sichuan white geese, while the Hungarian geese laid throughout the day. Also, the clutch length and the oviposition interval differed among these 3 breeds. Their average clutch lengths were approximately 14.07, 12.14 and 19.15 days in Zhedong white geese, Sichuan white geese, and Hungarian geese, respectively. While their oviposition intervals showed 2 peaks (39 and 47 h), 3 peaks (41, 50 and 53 h), and 1 peak (46 h). Moreover, there were significant correlation between egg yield and clutch length in Zhedong white geese ( r = 0.951), Sichuan white geese ( r = 0.987) and Hungarian geese ( r = 0.991), respectively. Taken together, the difference in laying behavior among the breeds was mainly reflected in laying time and oviposition intervals, Zhedong white geese and Sichuan white geese have egg laying time preference and short oviposition intervals, which was helpful not only to understand egg-laying process, but also to manage egg-laying geese scientifically and improve egg production.

This paper examines the dynamics of circulating hormone changes connected with reproduction in geese during the annual period related to gonad morphometry. One hundred geese were examined. The levels of prolactin (PRL), triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), testosterone (T), progesterone (P4) and estradiol (E2) were estimated. In both sexes, PRL level patterns fit a quadratic trend with elevations in the post-breeding and the second half of the breeding–laying periods. During these periods, differences in the PRL level between sexes were noted. In ganders, increased PRL levels during the laying period occurred earlier compared to in female geese. Cubic trends for T and E2 in ganders and quadratic for T, P4, and E2 in female geese were observed. PRL was negatively correlated with T in both sexes and with P4 and E2 in female geese. A higher level of T3 and variation in T4 in ganders with a quartic trend in ganders vs. a quadratic in female geese were noted. Patterns of PRL, T, and E2 suggested that the breeding–laying period in ganders may be shorter than in female geese. These findings will be used to explore experimental manipulations of the endocrine axis to increase synchronisation of both sexes.

Xupu goose, a breed from Hunan province, produces high quality and quantity of meat and liver. However, its egg production rate is low, with poor reproductive traits but strong broody performance. These characteristics decrease the economic value of Xupu goose significantly. Here, RNA-seq was used to analyze the transcriptome changes of ovaries of Xupu goose at different stages to explore the molecular mechanism of reproduction from the pre-laying period to the broody period. A total of 258 genes were differentially expressed in the 3 stages. These genes are associated with inflammation, reproduction, mutual recognition and adhesion between cells, and cytoskeleton formation, and so on. In particular, we report, for the first time, the expression patterns of MRP126, serglycin, TXNIP, and FZD2 during the pre-laying, egg-laying, and broody periods of goose ovaries. Functional analysis by GO annotation revealed that GO terms were mainly involved in actin, cell signal transduction and regulation, and cellular components. Three pathways, including focal adhesion (gga04510), ECM-receptor interaction (gga04512), and N-Glycan biosynthesis (gga00510), were significantly enriched in the three groups. These findings provide a basis for further exploration of profiles of goose ovaries to improve egg production of Xupu goose.
