Abstract: The effectiveness of lingual brackets in correcting vertical and anteroposterior displacement achieved during the initial alignment phase of orthodontic treatment is lower than that of the effectiveness of labial brackets.

“…Previous studies have compared buccal and lingual orthodontic treatment 5,10,11,18‐24 . Advantages and disadvantages have been reported for both alternatives: patients undergoing lingual orthodontic treatment were shown to have impaired speech articulation compared with patients having buccal orthodontic treatment 19‐22,25 .…”

“…Previous studies have compared buccal and lingual orthodontic treatment. 5,10,11,[18][19][20][21][22][23][24] Advantages and disadvantages have been reported for both alternatives: patients undergoing lingual orthodontic treatment were shown to have impaired speech articulation compared with patients having buccal orthodontic treatment. [19][20][21][22]25 Moreover, a systematic review has reported that lingual appliances are related to overall oral discomfort and increased eating difficulty.…”

“…Compared with labial orthodontics, lingual orthodontics has the advantages of invisibility, beauty, and preserving posterior anchorage. 10,11 However, the use of lingual appliance to adduct the anterior teeth easily results in torque loss. 12 This adverse effect can be reduced by changing the height of power-arm and the position of the force applied in conjunction with the application of the implant anchorage.…”

“…Bracket type, along with slot size, slot width, method of ligation, wire size, type of alloy, and contact angle between slot and wire, has been attributed to frictional resistance in sliding. 18 Although many factors were involved when interpreting the variation in frictional forces between labial and lingual brackets, the difference in bracket slot-width (mesio-distal) could be one of the important deciding factors. Since labial and lingual brackets have many differences in terms of dimension and clinical performance, the mechanics involved should be understood.…”

“…When compared to labial side, lingual self-ligating brackets have altered parameters of friction like mode of ligation, force of ligation, bracket design, and contact angle, and only few studies have been conducted to estimate friction between archwire alloys and lingual self-ligating brackets. [16][17][18][19][20] An understanding of the frictional characteristics of labial and these newer lingual brackets with various archwire alloys is imperative and hence this study is to evaluate the frictional properties of lingual self-ligating brackets comparing with that of conventional lingual and labial self-ligating brackets with three different archwire alloys in various environments.…”
