Comparison of the long-term efficacy of low dose 131I versus antithyroid drugs in the treatment of hyperthyroidism

Abstract: This study showed a shorter cure time using 131I. Time to remission in ATD patients was shorter during the first 9 months. Thereafter, the 131I group showed a higher remission rate. Low long-term hypothyroidism and low recurrence or persistent hyperthyroidism rates were achieved with our 131I dose regimen, regardless of the underlying disease. Lesser 131I activity was used as compared with current guidelines. Within limitations, our concept may simplify procedures in other geographical regions.

“…There are several possible explanations for and factors contributing to the higher incidence rate of hypothyroidism in our patients: First, the higher rate might be due to the longer follow‐up time in our study. When observation is limited to 12 months or less, as in several previous reports, 17,20,27 the overall hypothyroidism incidence rate of hypothyroidism may be lowered, as it increases with ongoing follow‐up time 15,19,21,25 . Second, pretreatment with antithyroid drugs is a possible confounder, because in case of stimulation of a previously suppressed TSH by antithyroid drugs, the risk of hypothyroidism may increase.…”

In this context, stimulation of radioiodine uptake by perinodular tissue may be suppressed by exogenous levothyroxine suppression.…”

“…Overall, 36 patients (6.8 %) were administered a second RIT after 3 months, according to their laboratory parameters, and 8 patients received a third treatment after the 6-month follow-up. In study 2 [ 7 ] , 288 of the 386 newly diagnosed GD patients initially enrolled were followed for over 9 years. In this study, 155 patients had received RIT, and 133 received ATD, according to the treatment protocol.…”

“…Simplifi ed Coping Styles [ 13 ] was adapted for Chinese participants based on the Ways of Coping Questionnaire by Folkman and Lazarus [ 14 ] . This scale consists of 20 questions and was divided into 2 factors: positive coping styles (Questions 1-12) and negative coping styles (Questions [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. Each question was rated on a 4-point scale: 1 = never, 2 = rare, 3 = moderate, and 4 = often.…”
