Comparison of the Modified TyG Indices and Other Parameters to Predict Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease in Youth

Abstract: We investigated the modified triglycerides-glucose (TyG) indices and other markers for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in 225 participants aged 10–19 years, and the participants were divided into subgroups according to their NAFLD grade. We performed logistic regression analysis and calculated the odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of tertiles 2 and 3 for each parameter, with those of tertile 1 as a reference. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was cal… Show more

“…TyG-BMI, a modified TyG index, showed a better ability to identify MAFLD than TyG itself, not only in males but also in females. The AUROC of TyG-BMI in diagnosing MAFLD ranged from 0.774–0.9084 [ 60 62 ]. In this study, it was discovered that the AUROC of TyG-BMI was 0.956 (95% CI 0.933–0.980), which was higher than that reported in other studies.…”

“…Early screening for NAFLD is important for preventing severe complications because NAFLD is usually asymptomatic and reversible in the early stages with proper management. 21) Although liver biopsy is the gold standard for the diagnosis of NAFLD, it is very invasive. 3,22) Moreover, its results cannot represent the entire liver because the sample is limited to a small part of the liver.…”

“…Thus, laboratory tests and imaging studies are required for the early detection of pediatric NAFLD. 20,21,23) 1. Laboratory tests ALT level has acceptable sensitivity for detecting NAFLD, although it is not correlated with the histologic grade of NAFLD.…”

“…Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic disease induced by excessive fat accumulation in the liver that includes simple steatosis, steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis [ 1 , 2 ]. As NAFLD is associated with cardio-metabolic risk factors, it has been additionally related to all-cause deaths due to cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus as well as liver cirrhosis [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]. The prevalence of NAFLD among youths increased from 19.34 million in 1990 to 29.49 million in 2017 according to the Global Burden of Disease database-based study, and corresponding values increased 2.7-fold from the 1980s to 2007–2010 in the USA [ 6 , 7 ].…”
