Comparison of the visual outcomes between PRK-MMC and phakic IOL implantation in high myopic patients

Abstract: Purpose To compare the visual outcomes between PRK-MMC and phakic IOL in patients with more than 8 diopter (D) of myopia. Methods This comparative study was performed on 23 eyes under treatment with Artiflex (group A) and 23 eyes under treatment with PRK-MMC (group B). Artiflex phakic IOL (Ophtec BV) was used in group A, and the VISX STAR S4 Excimer Laser (Abbott) was used for PRK-MMC in group B. Results The safety index was 1.11 ± 0.23 and 1.05 ± 0.25 (P ¼ 0.100) and the efficacy index was 1.02 ± 0.11 and 0.9… Show more

“…Nassiri et al [19] in 2018 in a retrospective study of 55 eyes of 29 patients followed 6 months, the UCDVA was 20/25 or better in 81.5% of the cases. The results of Hashemi et al [20,21] in a study with 53 eyes of 28 patients with sphere −10.22 ± (3.02) were that 72.2% of the eyes had 20/25 or more vision and the safety and efficacy [24][25][26][27] are coincident with our work, especially in the first and second year. According to the results of our study, the endothelial cell losses in percentages were similar to those obtained by the different authors after 2 years of follow-up [24][25][26][27][28].…”

“…5 The use of SMILE for high myopia presents several advantages, namely avoiding the flap created during laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and subsequent risk of ectasia, the risk of haze in high-myopic patients after photorefractive keratectomy and the invasive procedure on phakic IOL surgery.…”

“…Although PIOL was better than PRK in terms of quality of vision, PRK was an alternative in patients with inadequate anterior chamber depths. 33,34 Another drawback of PRK compared to LASIK is postoperative pain particularly for the first 72 hours due to epithelial removal. 35 Bandage soft contact lenses speed the epithelialization and pain relief after PRK.…”
