Comparison of Topical Therapy for Striae Alba (20% Glycolic Acid/0.05% Tretinoin Versus 20% Glycolic Acid/ 10% L-Ascorbic Acid)

Abstract: Analysis of these data reveals: 1) both regimens can improve the appearance of stretch marks; 2) these topical therapy regimens are safe and effective in study patients with minimal irritation; 3) elastin content within the reticular and papillary dermis can increase with topical 20% glycolic acid combined with 0.05% tretinoin emollient cream therapy; 4) both regimens increased epidermal thickness and decreased papillary dermal thickness in treated stretch marks when compared with untreated stretch marks; 5) c… Show more

“…Once SG have developed, attempts at treating them with a variety of lasers and topical tretinoin, alpha hydroxyl acids and vitamin C have shown mild improvement at best. [11][12][13] Despite restricting our trial to nulliparas in an attempt to limit it to the development of de novo SG, a high percentage of women (45.1 and 48.8% in cases and controls, respectively) had stretch marks at the enrolment. However, old SG were easy to differentiate from new ones at the postpartum assessment due to a clear difference in colour and texture.…”

“…Studien über die lokale Anwendung von 20%iger Glykolsäure in Kombination mit 0,05%igem Tretinoin bzw. 10%iger L-Ascorbinsäure zeigten respektable und auch histologisch objektivierbare Verbesserungen der Striae [4,12]. Über die alleinige Anwendung einer Tretinoincreme werden unterschiedliche Erfolge berichtet.…”

“…A variety of treatment modalities have been used for the treatment of striae distensae, such as tretinoin cream [6], a combination of tretinoin and glycolic acid or ascorbic acid and glycolic acid [7], which have shown some effect in the early stages. Microdermabrasion can be a useful therapeutic option with a possible stimulatory effect on type I procollagen formation [8].…”
