Comparison of Two Overmodulation Strategies in an Indirect Matrix Converter

Abstract: This paper discusses two overmodulation controls, namely, square wave and trapezoidal, in the indirect matrix converter (IMC) for motor drive application. The differences between these two modulations are analyzed based on the output-input voltage transfer ratio (VTR), the efficiency, and the current total harmonic distortions under two load conditions. Moreover, the performance is then improved by implementing four-step commutation methods in the primary side of the IMC. The validity of the proposed methods w… Show more

“…It is exactly that this limitation leads to lack of load driving ability when the driving system combined with USMC is overloading in the range of approximate rated speed. Nowadays, the method of improving voltage transfer ratio (VTR) can be divided into two categories: topology [6][7][8][9] and modulation [10][11][12][13][14][15].…”

“…The modulation strategy operating with non-unity input power factor has been proposed [10], which allows increased maximum output voltage. References [11] and [12] discussed two overmodulation strategies based on square wave and trapezoidal wave. The modulation with injecting 3rd harmonic [13] can improve the VTR to 1.…”

“…A developing branch of MCs is the two-stage MC (TSMC) [12]. It not only inherits high efficiency, high power density, high reliability, and long usage lifetime from the conventional MC, but also has advantages in convenient commutation, simple clamp circuits, and the feasibility of zero current switching in rectifier stage, [13], [14]. For this reason, in [11], conclusions have been made via theoretical derivation and experiments that the TSMC's power density is higher than the MC's, and that the TSMC's efficiency at part load is greater than the MC's when output frequency is above 10 Hz.…”

“…But these PWM strategies have no zero vectors. In [23][24][25][26], carrier-PWM realization and overmodulation method for IMC are discussed. In the applications of indirect matrix converter, [27] proposes IMC to control doubly fed induction generation for wind power system.…”
