Comparison of Ventriculotomy Closure With and Without a Coelomic Fat Patch in Japanese Quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica)

Abstract: Removal of foreign bodies from the ventriculus in birds may necessitate ventriculotomy. Complications with this intervention include leakage and adhesion formation. To investigate if the use of a coelomic fat patch and a tension-relieving suture in addition to a simple interrupted pattern would improve the healing process after ventriculotomy, 2 groups of 9 Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) underwent ventriculotomy. In group 1, only simple-interrupted and tension-relieving sutures were used for closu… Show more

“…Although the intestinal histology of Japanese quail has been used as an investigation method in numerous experiments ( Berg et al., 2001 , Grote et al., 2008 , He et al., 2014 , Rodler and Sinowatz, 2013 , Sinclair et al., 2012 , Simova-Curd et al., 2013 ), there are very few references pertaining to the general histological features of the healthy Japanese quail intestinal tract. The only comprehensive information can be found in a book by Theodore C. Fitzgerald which contains comprehensively illustrated hand drawn histological images with explanation of features.…”

“…In addition, the lack of omentum in birds creates a higher risk of peritonitis as a result of leakage during gastrointestinal surgery. [28][29][30] Endoscopic proventricular biopsy was also considered a high-risk procedure for the bird in the present report owing to possible perforation of the severely dilated proventriculus and concerns regarding the integrity of the proventricular wall. Although proventricular biopsy could have provided further evidence to support the diagnosis, it was not believed to be necessary in this case.…”

“…Esses métodos incluem técnicas menos invasivas como administração de hemicelulose e catárticos emolientes para pequenos pássaros; recuperação por endoscopia proventricular e ventricular com endoscópios rígidos e flexíveis. Em alguns casos, técnicas mais invasivas, como a proventriculotomia e ventriculotomia cirúrgica (SIMOVA-CURD et al, 2013), podem ser utilizadas.…”
