Comparison of water relations and drought related flag leaf traits in hexaploid spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Abstract: Six wheat varieties/lines and six derived F 2 hybrids were studied to ascertain and compare heritability and genetic advance for flag leaf osmotic pressure, flag leaf water potential, flag leaf venation, flag leaf area and flag leaf thickness. Most of these characters had high heritabilities and expected a genetic advance. Prospects of a genetic improvement for all the characters studied are evident. The most promising cross combinations are PASBAN-90 × SARC-5 and SH-2002 × SARC-5. These traits therefore deser… Show more

“…Numerous available studies in sunflower show significant genetic variability and positive correlation between the yield of drought stress and osmotic adjustment (Chimenti et al 2002, Rauf andSadaqat 2008a, b), but none of them reports on the type of genetic variability associated with this trait in sunflower. However, the type of genetic variability for leaf hydraulics was previously estimated in other crops (Dhandha and Sethi 1998, Rebetzke et al 2003, Bhutta et al 2006. Dhandha and Sethi (1998) observed additive type of gene action in wheat for leaf trait such as relative water contents.…”

“…The traits such as plant height, CAT, RWC, 100-grain weight, and POD had heritability calculated ranging from under control environment 28Á45% as well as under saline conditions 19Á31%, indicating that these characters are moderately heritable and that selection for these would have to be done several times over many generation of inbreeding to accumulate the desired gene (Table III). The chance that that would be done on estimation of heritability for yield traits increases with recurrent selections (Bhutta et al, 2005). Heterosis represents the dominance and epistatic interaction.…”

“…Daun dari varietas tahan kering umumnya lebih kecil dan memiliki rasio luas permukaan dan volume yang lebih rendah dibandingkan jenis yang telah beradaptasi pada kondisi kelembaban yang memadai, selain itu luas area daun yang lebih rendah merupakan alat untuk menjaga kelembaban dengan pengurangan transpirasi (Bhutta et al, 2006).…”
