Compatibilization effect of aminated poly(phthalazinone ether ketone)s in carbon fiber‐reinforced copoly(phthalazinone ether sulfone)s composites

Abstract: In this study, a kind of aminated poly(phthalazinone ether ketone)s (PPEK‐NH2s) with amino groups on side chains were synthesized by the condensation polymerization of 4‐(4‐Hydroxylphenyl)(2H)‐phthalazin‐1‐one (DHPZ), 4,4′‐difluoro benzophenone (DFK), and the third active monomer (4‐Amino)phenylhydroquinone (4‐AmPHQ). Then, PPEK‐NH2s were employed as compatibilizers to enhance the interfacial adhesion of carbon fiber (CF) reinforced copoly(phthalazinone ether sulfone)s (PPBES) composites. “…As a flexible layer which is typically applied on CF surface, the sizing agent acts an important role on the application of CF, which endows CF with high processing stability and surface quality 17,18 . On the other hand, many research studies 19–22 prove the relevance of sizing process and the improvement of interfacial properties of composites. For example, Yuan et al 23 synthesized semi‐aliphatic polyimide as CF sizing agent, and the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and flexural strength of CF/PEEK raised by 23.8% and 7.8%.…”

“…Among them, molecular weight is considered as an important factor influencing on surface roughness and thermal stability. When applying CF reinforced epoxy matrix composites, actual service life was affected by environment elements, such as temperature, humidity, and ultraviolet light [20]. Thermal aging was pointed out as a main form of composite corrosion failure, which decreased mechanical properties in long time service [21].…”

“…Carbon fibers (CFs), which are characterized by lightweight, strong strength, good thermal stability, high weathering resistance and radiation resistance, are widely used as the ideal reinforcing materials for polymers or matrix in various fields such as aerospace, automobile, chemical industry, textile and so on . The properties of composites are influenced not only by the inherent characteristics of CFs and matrix resin but also by the quality of their interface . However, the good wettability and desired interfacial adhesion cannot obtain owing to the nonpolar, stable and smooth graphite surface of Untreated CFs without fiber surface modification …”
