Complete genome analysis of coxsackievirus A24 isolated in Yunnan, China, in 2013

Abstract: Human coxsackievirus A24 (CVA24) belongs to the species Enterovirus C, and variants of this virus frequently cause acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC). The complete genome of the K282/YN/CHN/2013 strain, isolated from a healthy child in Yunnan, China, in 2013, is reported here for the first time. The strain showed 80.0 % and 79.9 % nucleotide sequence identity to CVA24 prototype strain Joseph and CVA24 variant prototype EH24, respectively. The K282/YN/CHN/2013 strain belongs to the CVA24 serotype. Twelve am… Show more

“…During the study period, there were two peaks of AHC incidence, in 2007 and 2010 [ 17 ]. Since 1971, Cox24v has been the major pathogen of AHC in China [ 47 ]. The outbreaks caused by CA24v are usually more widespread than those caused by EV70 [ 9 ].…”

“…For example, coxsackievirus infections in infants can result in hand-foot-and-mouth disease, myocarditis, meningitis, and encephalitis [ 19 ]. Coxsackievirus A24 and enterovirus 70 are associated with acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis [ 20 ]. Recently, some high virulent strains of enteroviruses have emerged and became a severe threat to children worldwide.…”

“…EV‐C mainly contains poliovirus types 1–3 (PV1–3), some group A coxsackieviruses (CVA1, 11, 13, 17, 19–22, and 24), and some recently discovered EV (EV‐C95, 96, 99, 102, 104, 105, 109, 113, and 116–118), totaling 23 serotypes 1 . In addition to poliomyelitis caused by PV, the recent discovery of new EVs has gradually aroused attention, such as CVA24 variant strain (CVA24v), which causes acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis 2 . Enterovirus C96 (EV‐C96) is a recently discovered EV; the prototype strain (strain BAN00‐10488) was isolated from a fecal specimen of a patient with acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) in Bangladesh in 2000 3 .…”
