Complicated Root Canal Morphology of Mandibular Lateral Incisors Is Associated with the Presence of Distolingual Root in Mandibular First Molars: A Cone-beam Computed Tomographic Study in a Taiwanese Population

Abstract: The simultaneous appearance of DLRs in PMFMs and complicated root canal configurations in PMLIs is prominent in Taiwanese individuals. Clinicians should be aware of the correlation between the anatomic variants of PMFMs and PMLIs, which are important before endodontic treatment.

“…The CBCT machine (NewTom 5G; QR, Verona, Italy) was operated by board-certified radiologist following the standard manufacturer’s settings as previously described [ 10 , 12 ]. The skull orientation and region of interest were taken according to previous studies [ 10 , 15 , 22 ]. The maxilla was bilaterally symmetric and the occlusal plane, either in the frontal or sagittal view, was parallel to the ground (Supplemental Figure 2 A).…”

“…Subsequent to rinsing, sections underwent color separation in 0.5% hydrochloric-alcohol solution for 5 sec, followed by washing two times with 95% ethyl alcohol for 5 min each, two times with absolute ethyl alcohol for 5 min each and xylene + ethyl alcohol (1:1) for 5 min. Finally, samples were subjected to xylene cleaning and neutral gum sealing, and followed by visualization under light microscope (Nikon Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) ( 35 37 ).…”

“…The use of operative microscopy, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and microcomputed tomography have increased the number of reports on complex root canal anatomies previously ignored. Variations in root canal system configuration have also been analyzed between genders and in patients belonging to distinct age groups and ethnicities [14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22].…”
