Complications and Reimplantation of Penile Implants

Abstract: Background:Complications of penile prosthesis implants can be divided into surgical and mechanical failure. We investigated penile prosthesis implants to clarify the surgical and mechanical complications that have arisen in our clinical experience. Methods: In the 1 1 years between 1984 and 1995, 83 penile prostheses were implanted in 74 patients ranging from 37 to 82 years of age. Results: O f the 64 malleable and mechanical prostheses, 1 1 were extracted, including 4 removed because of surgical complications … Show more

“…4,5 However, biocompatibility and biomechanical issues have been a problem in selected patients. 6,7 Vascular reconstructive techniques to restore erectile function have been performed for several decades. 8,9 Although the overall outcome of vascular reconstruction for erectile dysfunction has been gradually improving due to the evolution of microsurgical techniques, operative complications, such as infection, vessel occlusion and overall operative morbidity are not negligible.…”

“…Various reconstructive procedures have been attempted to achieve functional and cosmetic properties, but these are often limited by a shortage of native penile tissue (5)(6)(7)(8). In addition, these reconstructive procedures often involve multiple-stage surgeries, which may include the use of silicone penile prostheses or autograft implantation (9), but corporal tissue function is not restored.…”
