Complications Associated With Amniocentesis in the Third Trimester of Pregnancy

Abstract: Background: Amniocentesis is a procedure done for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. It is a useful resource to establish fetal lung maturity in the final stages of pregnancy, when it is necessary for the pregnancy resolution. The objective of the study was to determine the morbidity associated with amniocentesis in the third trimester of pregnant women.

“…93,94 However, many of these biomarkers are only predictive of sPTB if measured in amniotic fluid collected through an invasive process known as amniocentesis. 95 The process itself carries some risks to the mother and/or foetus, and since the advent of non-invasive prenatal testing using cell-free foetal DNA sequencing, the procedure is no longer commonly performed. 96 It is thus important to consider non-invasive alternatives such as CVF, plasma or urine for novel proteomic or metabolomic biomarkers.…”

“…It has previously been shown that twin pregnancies have a higher risk of developing chromosomal abnormalities. In addition to genetic testing, amniocentesis is used in third-trimester screening tests to check for markers of fetal lung maturation in amniotic fluid (Boyer, Cameron, Munoz-Maldonado, Bronsteen, Comstock, Lee, & Goncalves, 2014;Ramirez-Montiel, Casillas-Barrera, Morales-Morales, Ortiz, Carrasco-Blancas, & Morales, 2017). The main concern is fetal complications.…”
