Complications of Static Facial Suspensions With Expanded Polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE)

Abstract: An ePTFE facial sling is an option for static facial suspension that can be therapeutic for patients with seventh nerve damage. There is a high rate of complications leading to revision surgery. Future studies are needed to evaluate alloplastic alternatives to ePTFE.

“…Such materials can extrude to create an unnatural appearance, and become visible under the skin. 7 Dynamic procedures seek to recover smiling, but generally also have the effect of lifting soft tissues, so correcting the ptosis. The most reliable dynamic procedure that affords such adjunctive static effects is transposition of a temporalis flap.…”

“…Mieux que le Gore-Tex prôné par Levet et Jost [6] qui présente un risque d'exposition, source d'infection nécessi-tant son retrait [6,7], le fascia lata est utilisé pour sa faible capacité de distension et sa bonne tolérance par l'organisme. Les complications de ce type de prélèvement sont rares.…”

“…Traditionally, autografts, and allografts have been used for static facial suspension, but both have limitations. Biomaterials such as expanded polytetrafluoroethylene and acellular human dermis have been implemented for static suspension [6][7][8]. However, allografts may be susceptible to immune rejection and infection problems, which if happened would require surgery again.…”
