-Low genetic diversity of citrus scion and rootstock cultivars makes the crop more vulnerable to diseases and pests. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of 'Jaffa' sweet orange grafted onto five rootstocks over six harvests in subtropical conditions in the north of Paraná state, Brazil. The experiment used a randomized block design, with six replications and two trees per plot, spaced at 7.0 m x 4.0 m. The rootstocks were: 'Rangpur' lime, 'Cleopatra' and 'Sunki' mandarins, 'Fepagro C-13' citrange, and 'Swingle' citrumelo. The variables evaluated were vigor, yield, and yield efficiency of the trees as well as the physical and chemical characteristics of the fruits. Data were subjected to analysis of variance, complemented by Scott-Knott test at 5% probability. The smallest tree canopy for 'Jaffa' sweet orange plants was induced by the 'Rangpur' lime rootstock. The trees had the same cumulative yield performance over six seasons for all rootstocks. The best yield efficiency for 'Jaffa' sweet orange trees was provided by 'Fepagro C-13' citrange rootstock. With regard to fruit quality, no differences were observed among the rootstocks and the 'Jaffa' sweet orange fruits met the standards required by the fresh fruit market and the fruit processing industry.

SUMMARYThe increased availability of soil water is important for the management of non-irrigated orange orchards. The objective of this study was to evaluate the availability of soil water in a Haplorthox (Rhodic Ferralsol) under different tillage systems used for orchard plantation, mulch management and rootstocks in a "Pêra" orange orchard in northwest Paraná, Brazil. An experiment in a split-split-plot design was established in 2002, in an area cultivated with Brachiaria brizantha grass in which three tillage systems (no tillage, conventional tillage and strip-tillage) were used for orchard plantation. This grass was mowed twice a year between the rows, representing two mulch managements in the split plots (no mulching and mulching in the plant rows). The split-split-plots were represented by two rootstocks ("Rangpur" lime and "Cleopatra" mandarin). The soil water content in the plant rows was evaluated in the 0-20 cm layer in 2007 and at 0-20 and 20-40 cm in 2008-2009. The effect of soil tillage systems prior to implantation of orange orchards on soil water availability was less pronounced than mulching and the rootstocks. The soil water availability was lower when "Pêra" orange trees were grafted on "Cleopatra" mandarin than on "Rangpur" lime rootstocks. Mulching had a positive influence on soil water availability in the sandy surface layer (0-20 cm) and sandy clay loam subsurface (20-40 cm) of the soil in the spring. The production of B. brizantha between the rows and residue disposal in the plant rows as mulch increased water availability to the "Pêra" orange trees.Index terms: Brachiaria brizantha, no tillage, soil management, soil texture, time domain reflectometry.(

Com o objetivo de identificar alternativas ao uso do limoeiro 'Cravo', avaliou-se a influência de porta-enxertos na produtividade e nas características físico-químicas dos frutos de laranjeira 'Valência' em experimento instalado em janeiro de 1994, sem irrigação, no município de Nova Esperança-PR. Adotou-se delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições, três plantas úteis por parcela e seis porta-enxertos como tratamentos: limoeiro 'Cravo' (C. limonia), tangerineira 'Cleópatra' (C. reshni) e 'Sunki' (C. sunki), citrangeiro 'Troyer' (P. trifoliata x C. sinensis), tangeleiro 'Orlando' (C. tangerina x C. paradisi) e laranjeira 'Caipira' (C. sinensis). Avaliou-se a qualidade dos frutos em duas safras (2002 e 2005), o desenvolvimento vegetativo e a eficiência de produção em 1999 e 2003, e a produção (1996 a 2005). Em relação ao 'Cravo', a 'Sunki' induziu maior produção e volume de copa, e eficiência de produção e qualidade do fruto equivalentes; o 'Troyer' induziu eficiência de produção equivalente, frutos com rendimento industrial superior e peso médio inferior; a 'Cleópatra' induziu produção equivalente, eficiência de produção inferior e maior volume de copa. O estudo mostrou que os porta-enxertos 'Sunki', 'Cleópatra' e 'Troyer' se destacaram como opções para a diversificação do 'Cravo'.
