Composition analysis and antioxidant activity evaluation of a high purity oligomeric procyanidin prepared from sea buckthorn by a green method

Abstract: Procyanidin is an important polyphenol for its health-promoting properties, however, the study of procyanidin in sea buckthorn was limited. In this paper, sea buckthorn procyanidin (SBP) was obtained through a green isolation and enrichment technique with an extraction rate and purity of 9.1% and 91.5%. The structure of SBP was analyzed using Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The results show that … Show more

“…Many studies in vitro and in vivo have proved polyphenolic compounds can effectively scavenge excessive free radicals and reduce chronic diseases caused by oxidative injury, such as diabetes, cancer, and CVD ( 11 , 14 ). As a polyphenolic compound, procyanidins are equipped with powerful free radical scavenging ability, which has a positive relationship with its concentration ( 10 ).…”

“…Although there are many factors leading to vascular endothelial cells' injury, oxidative damage of vascular endothelial cells is considered an important causative factor and has obtained more attention. Recent studies have proved procyanidins can prevent and improve oxidative injury of vascular endothelial cells, especially oligomeric procyanidins ( 10 , 11 ). Also, medical and toxicology-related experiments have shown natural procyanidins have non-carcinogenic, non-toxic, and non-teratogenic advantage compared with synthetic compounds.…”

“…Our previous studies isolated sea buckthorn oligomeric proanthocyanidins (SBP) from the fruits of sea buckthorn produced in China's Qinghai Province. Chemical composition analysis showed that SBP was composed of epicatechin gallate, b-type proanthocyanidins, gallocatechin-catechin, and gallocatechin dimer (Zhu et al, 2021). Oxidative stress is closely related to cardiovascular problems (Shields et al, 2021).…”

“…Impaired mitochondrial respiratory function results in inhibition of electron transfer, low-density lipoprotein oxidation, loss of scavenging agents, and permanent dysfunction of cardiomyocytes (Chakrabarty et al, 2018). SBP also protect macrophages against oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide (Zhu et al, 2021). However, the mechanisms by which SBP protect macrophages under oxidative stress conditions remain uncertain.…”
