Composition of the Essential Oils of Thymus and Origanum Species from Algeria and Their Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities

Abstract: The composition of the essential oils of Origanum and Thymus species restricted to Algeria and the North Africa region was determined. Antioxidant and antibacterial activities of the isolated essential oils were also determined. The oils of oregano plants were strongly characterized by p-cymene (16.8-24.9%), gamma-terpinene (16.8-24.9%), thymol (8.4-36.0%), and carvacrol (1.1-29.7%), a thymol chemotype for Origanum floribundum and a alpha-terpineol chemotype for Thymus numidicus being described for the first t… Show more

“…The essential oil derived from thyme and oregano (carvacrol and thymol) is known to possess in vitro antimicrobial, antifungal and antioxidant activities (Faleiro et al, 2005;Hazzit et al, 2006). Recent studies on experimental animals have revealed that some ingredients of popular herbs and spice plants, e.g., capsaicin or curcumin, can also stimulate digestive enzymes, bile fl ow and enhance bile acid secretion (Platel and Srinivasan, 2001).…”

Leaf and flower extracts of Thymus species have sedative, antispasmodic, antioxidant (2), antimicrobial (3,4), tonic, anti-inflammatory, and antiparasitic properties (5). Many components from essential Thymus oils are known, such as thymol, linalool, carvacrol, geranial, and ␥-terpineol (6).…”
