Comprehensive Invitro Evaluation of Pharmacological Activities of Selected Plant Extracts and Gc-MS Profiling of Flacourtia Jangomas Flower Extract

Abstract: Objective: Continued exploration and bio-evaluation of plants hold good as there are an increasing demand and recognition of natural products in disease management. The aim of this study was to investigate the antioxidant, cytotoxic, and antiproliferative activity of methanolic extracts of different parts of six plants. Six plants -Couroupita guianensis, Flacourtia jangomas, Lucuma nervosa, Euphorbia milii, Acalypha hispida, and Hydnocarpus pentandra -were chosen for this study. Methods:The plant parts were ex… Show more

“…A scavenging of >50% was observed at extract concentration 6.25µg/ml and higher ( Figure 2). Based on the IC 50 values, the ABTS radical scavenging potential of leaf extract (6.03µg/ml) in this study was higher than that of the result of ABTS radical scavenging potential by leaf extract (>30µg/ml) of the study carried out by George et al [28]. In the present study, the scavenging potential of leaf extract of H. pentandra observed was lower than that of ascorbic acid (IC 50 value 2.48µg/ml).…”

“…The seed and seed oil of H. pentandra are used traditionally to treat ailments such as leprosy, skin diseases, eczema, dermatitis, tubercular laryngitis, chronic ulcers, dyspepsia, flatulence and verminosis by local people of sacred groves of Trissur district, Kerala, India [34]. The plant is reported to exhibit bioactivities such as larvicidal [19], antioxidant [35], antibacterial [36] and anticancer [28] [37] activity. The present study was performed to investigate antimicrobial, insecticidal and antiradical potential of methanol extract of leaves of H. pentandra.…”

“…Phenolic compounds contained in the noni fruit ranged from 5.94 to 36.52 g/100 g of dry material [24]. Solvent organic extracts contain a mixture of secondary metabolites including alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, and other phenolic compounds; these molecules are associated with the defense mechanisms of plants by their repellent or attractive properties, protection against biotic and abiotic stresses, and maintenance of structural integrity of plants [15,28], and the class of natural compounds possessing a wide range of pharmacological activities [29,30].…”

“…Methanol extract of fruits contain a very good amount of phenolics also showed strong radical scavenging activity [61]. Antioxidant efficacy of different parts of the plant was studied using DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assay; of which the flower extract of F. jangomas showed significant antioxidant potential with IC50 values of 11.16±0.54 μg/ml and 12.34±0.37 μg/ml for DPPH and ABTS assays [62].…”

“…Methanolic extract of flower showed promising cytotoxic activity against the two cancer cell lines, Calu6 and SCC9 with IC50 values of 43.57±0.04 μg/ml and 53.42±0.15 μg/ml, respectively. The antiproliferative activity of extracts investigated by analyzing cell cycle through flow cytometry revealed that treatment with methanol extract of flower caused significant arrest in G2M phase of cell cycle [62].…”
