Comprehensive review of the epidemiology and treatments for malignant adult cardiac tumors

Abstract: Carcinomas rarely occur in the heart, and cardiac surgeons are generally not familiar with cardiac tumors. Some characteristics of cardiac and intrapericardial tumors are reviewed to understand the features of cardiac tumors. Cardiac tumors are discussed separately from intrapericardial tumors. Primary cardiac tumors are predominantly benign whereas primary intrapericardial tumors are usually malignant. The prevalence of each tumor types is presented in this review. In both cardiac and intrapericardial tumors,… Show more

“…Moreover, the regenerative capacity of cardiomyocytes is considered to be negligibly low. Thus, cardiomyocytes appear to resist further transformation and proliferation processes such as EMT in the development of cancer (92). Accordingly, signaling of TGFβ in fibrogenesis of the heart might not be identical to that occurring in other organs where progressive fibrosis ultimately develops cancers.…”

“…Surgical resection of metastases to the heart is indicated in patients who not only show symptoms of intracardiac obstruction but also have a favorable prognosis. Some types of metastatic tumors respond to radiotherapy and chemotherapy as well [10].…”

“…PMPM is rare. Its prevalence in a large autopsy study was less than 0.0022% [ 4 ], although it is one of the common pericardial tumors in some clinical series [ 5 ]. McGehee and colleagues recently provided review of 103 published cases [ 6 ].…”
