COMPTEL upper limits for the $^{\sf 56}$Coγ-ray emission from SN1998bu

Abstract: Abstract. Supernova 1998bu in the galaxy M 96 was observed by COMPTEL for a total of 88 days starting 17 days after the explosion. We searched for a signal in the 847 keV and 1238 keV lines of radioactive 56 Co from this type Ia supernova. Using several different analysis methods, we did not detect SN1998bu. Our measurements should have been sensitive enough to detect 60 Co gamma-rays as predicted from supernova models. Our 2σ flux limit is 2.3 × 10 −5 photons cm −2 s −1 ; this would correspond to 0.35 M of e… Show more

“…Comparing these interpretations with Georgii et al (2002), the conclusions are similar, but not identical. Principally, at the larger distance, that work only rejects the high 56 Ni producing models, while at the shorter distance that work rejects all normally luminous models.…”

“…and (À0:6 AE 1:6) ; 10 À5 photons cm À2 s À1 for the 847 and 1238 keV lines (M. D. Leising 2004, private communication). The COMPTEL 2 upper limits are 3:1 ; 10 À5 and 2:3 ; 10 À5 photons cm À2 s À1 , respectively (using the lower of the imaging and spectral analysis results for each line, from Georgii et al 2002).…”

“…For SN 1998bu Based on observations collected at the La Silla and Paranal observatories of the European Southern observatory, Chile in time allocated to proposals 63.H-0527, 63.H-0649. Georgii et al (2002) report upper limits for the amount of 56 Ni manufactured in the explosion from the absence of 56 Co γ-ray emission. Their 2-σ upper limit is 0.35 M of 56 Ni.…”
