Computational Parametric Study of the Axial and Radial Clearances in a Centrifugal Rotary Blood Pump

Abstract: In centrifugal rotary blood pumps (RBP), clearances are a critical parameter in determining blood trauma. This study investigates the effect of axial clearance (Cax) and radial clearance (Crad) on the hydrodynamic and hemolytic performance of a centrifugal RBP. A centrifugal pump was parameterized so that it could be defined by geometric variables Cax and Crad. Optimal Latin hypercube sampling was used to determine design points based on Cax, Crad, and rotor speed (ω). For each design point, a computational si… Show more

“…Due to narrow clearance and a complex flow field resulting from the competing effect of centrifugal forces and pressure gradients, 17 clearance gaps are closely linked to blood damage and poor washout in blood pumps. 24 To assist old blood removal, the Corheart's secondary pathways are short with a 'straight line' shape and small pump size. A sufficient pressure gradient results in well-cleaned secondary pathways (Figure 7).…”

“…The Corheart has a good washout performance, which reduces the exposure time of blood to non‐physiological shear stress and artificial biomaterial surface. Due to narrow clearance and a complex flow field resulting from the competing effect of centrifugal forces and pressure gradients, 17 clearance gaps are closely linked to blood damage and poor washout in blood pumps 24 . To assist old blood removal, the Corheart's secondary pathways are short with a ‘straight line’ shape and small pump size.…”

“…The mass and momentum equations for the mean flow are solved assuming incompressible flow, while the energy equation is not needed. These equations can be found in Pope (2001). The momentum equation incorporates a source term of inertial and body forces which corresponds to the additional term included by the MRF approach, calculated as described by Torregrosa et al (2019).…”

“…SST k-ω model is a combination of the original k-ω model and standard k-ε model, switching to k-ε for the fully turbulent region and back to k-ω for near-wall and low Reynolds number flows. 59,164 Al-Azawy et al 165 compared six turbulence models for a pulsatile heart pump numerically, and the results were compared with experimental data. The RSM and SST k-ω model showed close agreement with reference data.…”
