Computed Tomography Findings in Intraabdominal Hypertension in Patients with Acute Pancreatitis

Abstract: Purpose Intraabdominal hypertension (IAH) in acute pancreatitis (AP) may reduce tissue perfusion and impair organ function and has been shown to portend poor prognosis. We investigated the computed tomography (CT) findings in patients with AP with IAH. Methods This retrospective study comprised of consecutive patients with AP from June 2016 to June 2018 in whom intraabdominal pressure (IAP) was measured. The patients who underwent a contrast-enhanced CT within 7 days of IAP measurement were included. Using a c… Show more

“…Regarding images, Gupta et al compared imaging findings on computed tomography in patients with and without IAH. The presence of collections, maximum diameter, and volume of collection, and the presence of moderate pleural effusion were risk factors for IAH [23]. The study by Verma et al comparing the CT findings in a group of moderate and SAP with and without IAH showed that the IAH group more frequently presented pancreatic necrosis >50%, moderate-gross ascites, and the "round belly sign".…”

“…A computed tomography exam of the abdomen is essential for the diagnosis and grading [1], and it is effective for the accurate prediction of the progression of acute pancreatitis [70,71]. In addition, Gupta et al found that computed tomography findings such as the presence of pancreatic necrosis, abdominal collections, ascites, pleural effusions, intestinal-wall thickening (>3 mm), bowel dilation, bowel-wall enhancement, and biliary dilatation are valuable signs for the diagnosis of intra-abdominal hypertension [72]. The presence of collection, volume and maximum dimension of the fluid collections, biliary dilatation, and presence of moderate pleural effusion were CT features that were significantly associated with the presence of IAH in severe acute pancreatitis.…”
