Computed Tomography Plane of the Target Approach in Computed Tomographic Stereotaxis

Abstract: A computed tomographic (CT) stereotactic system that uses the principle of bringing the reference markers and the probe holder into the CT plane of the target is described. This eliminates the need for obtaining the Z coordinate and enables one to measure directly the X and Y coordinates. The use of an arc and of a rotary arc carrier permits one to approach the target from any point on the skull. Off-axial reconstruction permits visualization of the trajectory in both the coronal and the sagittal planes.

“…After that the distances of the target from the midcommissural point in all 3 planes were measured. Using these measurements the target point was marked on the CT image (and left on the screen for postimplantation verification), and stereotactic coordinates for this point were measured using a technique previously described [19] . In the case of the STN, which was clearly visible on the MR images, the dorsal-lateral part of the nucleus was chosen as the target.…”

“…In this case, the middle of the foramen was targeted. The coordinates were measured directly on the CT image and then adjusted using the technique described in a previous publication [18] . The trajectory in the coronal and sagittal planes were adjusted to place the entry point of the needle on the surface of the face approxi- The frame is mounted on the CT table with a skull in the head holder of the frame.…”
