Computer-Aided Diagnosis Systems for Brain Diseases in Magnetic Resonance Images

Abstract: This paper reviews the basics and recent researches of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems for assisting neuroradiologists in detection of brain diseases, e.g., asymptomatic unruptured aneurysms, Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and multiple sclerosis (MS), in magnetic resonance (MR) images. The CAD systems consist of image feature extraction based on image processing techniques and machine learning classifiers such as linear discriminant analysis, artificial neural networks, and support vector machi… Show more

“…Other techniques that can be considered for the preprocessing stage are: enhancement filter [70,71], contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization [72],auto-enhancement [73], wiener filter [73], fast Fourier transform [74], wavelet transform [74], anti-geometric diffusion [74], erosion filter [75], smoothing filters [76] and noise correction [76]. Figure 1 gives an illustration of preprocessing applied to a lung CT image, in which an improved distribution of level colors and, consequently, a better visualization of the lung and its structures, is accomplished.…”

“…4. The CAD system is cost-effective and efficient and can be used as a decision support system by the experts in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders [6]. Section 2 of this paper provides brief information about current medical technologies in the neurological disease diagnosis and also discusses challenges in medical big data analysis.…”

“…The algorithms of major CAD systems are developed by using techniques and theories of the pattern recognition field, and thus the CAD is involved as one of the pattern recognition fields [6]. The techniques of the CAD systems consist of data pre-processing, feature extraction and classification as discussed in Sect.…”

“…Many authors have proposed various algorithms for classification of brain tumors by developing various computer aided diagnostic (CAD) system based on different features and classification algorithm [1][2][3][4]. Generally, these systems use image processing techniques such as feature extraction, selection, and classification.…”
