Computer-Aided Surgical Treatment of Bilateral Choanal Atresia

Abstract: Transnasal surgical treatment of congenital choanal atresia is difficult. A limited view to the surgical field often accounts for poor results. An occurrence of a restenosis is frequently observed requiring difficult revision surgery. Severe complications include bleeding, skull base and intracranial injuries as well as orbital injuries. We describe the use of an optical computed tomography data-based navigation system for surgical planning and intraoperative guidance to improve treatment outcome. Computer-ass… Show more

“…Although most cases of choanal atresia can be safely managed simply with good quality pre-operative CT images, in difficult cases with other skull base abnormalities there may be a role for CT-navigation [52,53]. “…As more operating rooms are equipped with even further advanced navigation systems, computer-aided surgical treatment for choanal atresia has started to emerge [51]. This is due to an increase of CT navigation systems in endoscopic sinus surgery [52].…”

“…There have been several reports documenting modifications of image guidance technology for choanal atresia repair using other systems, including BrainLab (Leica Microsystems, Bannockburn, IL) and Medtronic (Jacksonville, FL) [4][5][6]. We use the Stryker Image-Guidance SNS (Kalamazoo, MI), which is frequently used by otolaryngologists, and offer this description.…”
